Tech Republic - CIO Insights

As business accelerates and companies become more reactionary it’s clear that in order to succeed you must be flexible.

With this in mind Peter Cochrane has listed his 10 Business Trends for 2013 and included 4 ways they affect you.

How prepared, capable and willing to be flexible is your organisation when responding to change?

Loans that Change Lives

Kiva is an organisation whose mission is 'to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty'.

Our December 2012 contribution has already helped provide microfinance to people in Peru, Armenia, Iraq and Ecuador; hard working people who are striving to create opportunity and better lives for themselves and their families.

Project Governance’s been my focus during 2012 and, like it or not, governance is a critical aspect of successful business and project outcomes. A sound project governance framework applied in a pragmatic way helps ensure benefits are delivered throughout the life-cycle of any initiative.

There are however some key criteria to changing culture and behaviours surrounding project governance. Any framework must:
  • Be relevant to the organisation; its intent and purpose needs to make sense.
  • Be positive and practical to apply with the process clarifying accountability and expectations.
  • Apply to and be followed by all; hierarchy is irrelevant, there are no exceptions.
  • Simplify process not result in additional bureaucracy, and
  • Enable organisations to do what's right now without losing sight of what's coming in the future.
If any one of Peter Cochrane's Business Trends for 2013 is accurate, it’s critical that organisations do the basics well while remaining willing and able to adapt as needed.

Traditional hierarchical management practices may no longer apply but the fundamentals of good management and what it can achieve should never be underestimated.

How has it happened? Why has it happened? There is no single answer so this post looks at some ways to re-establish an equilibrium for the title that is 'manager'.
